Chapter 72

Sleep was an impossibility. Dante lay in the dim bedroom, listening to the soft, rhythmic breathing of Maya beside him. Her face was relaxed in peaceful slumber, her arm draped instinctively across his chest. He looked at the woman who had transformed his dark, bloody existence into an empire of light. In the past, Elena had chosen secrets, isolation, and ultimately flight because she feared his world. But Maya had taught him that enduring love required absolute, unflinching honesty. Concealing this new threat from her would be an insult to the courage she had displayed when she faced down cartels and assassins at his side.

When the first pale gray light of dawn crept through the linen curtains, Maya’s eyelids fluttered open. Her warm brown eyes immediately found his, reading the dark tension in the set of his jaw.

"It’s happening again, isn't it?" Maya whispered softly, resting her palm against his cheek. "That message wasn't an empty threat."

Dante caught her hand, kissing her knuckles with quiet reverence. He did not sugarcoat the reality. He told her about the courier in Florence, the diplomatic pouch, and the box addressed to Sophia in Elena's name. Maya listened in silence, her rosy complexion paling slightly, but her eyes remained remarkably steadfast. She did not tremble. She had long since shed the fear of the helpless waitress who had once dropped menus in the corner booth of Bellanote.

"We are going together," Maya said firmly, sitting up and pulling her robe around her shoulders. "Sophia is eighteen, Dante. She survived the trauma of her childhood, she painted Elena’s memory, and she understands who she is. We cannot treat her like a porcelain doll while monsters circle her door. We face this as a family."

Two hours later, an armored black SUV crossed the rolling hills toward Florence. Little Hope remained at the Tuscan estate under the ironclad protection of Matteo’s inner circle. Throughout the journey, Dante kept one hand on the steering wheel and the other intertwined with Maya’s, drawing strength from her unbreakable composure.

They arrived at Sophia’s private studio near the Arno River. The eighteen-year-old stood near her easel, her brown eyes wide with a mixture of apprehension and grief. On a velvet-covered table sat an antique rosewood box adorned with silver filigree. Matteo stood beside it with two forensic specialists.

When Sophia saw them, she threw her arms around Maya, burying her face into her stepmother's shoulder. "Mom... the handwriting on the tag. It was her cursive."

Dante stepped forward, pulling on a pair of black leather gloves. He slid a slender titanium probe into the antique brass lock. A crisp, mechanical click echoed in the silent room.

The lid opened smoothly. Inside lay an ornate, vintage silver music box, its casing engraved with Tuscan sunflowers. When the lid cleared the hinges, a miniature mechanical cylinder began to rotate, playing a haunting, melancholy lullaby—an ancient Italian melody Elena had hummed to Sophia when she was an infant.

Beneath the music mechanism lay a heavy platinum ring set with a flawless black sapphire, and a single sheet of parchment. Dante picked up the letter. The handwriting was sharp, elegant, and chilling:

Elena destroyed our bank accounts, but the blood debt of the Russo family to the Consortium is eternal. This ring is the physical key to her final hidden vault in Vienna. Bring it to us, Dante, or the ashes of your past will burn the sanctuary of your children.
