Chapter 29

Dawn on the Montauk sands broke in cold shades of lavender and gray. Dante and Sophia stood on the edge of the dunes, watching the rigid-hull inflatable boat carrying Elena skip across the waves toward a massive container ship idling offshore. Sophia did not cry; she held Dante’s large hand with one fist and Maya’s with the other, seemingly understanding that her mother had sailed into a world free of monsters.

Seventy-two hours later, the underworld in New York crumbled under a legal earthquake.

Armed with the decrypted hard drive Elena had left in the lockbox, Dante bypassed street violence entirely. He routed the audio logs and financial ledgers directly to the Special Prosecutor and Federal Internal Affairs. Within twenty-four hours, five compromised federal agents were arrested, the Barone syndicate was paralyzed by federal RICO indictments, and Luca was handed a one-way transfer to ADX Florence, sentenced to live out his days in concrete isolation.

That afternoon, a sleek black town car pulled up outside Maya’s modest apartment in Brooklyn. Matteo stepped out, dressed in a sharp suit, and held the door open, handing her a black leather portfolio.

"Mr. Russo requested that I drive you to an appointment, Miss Bennett," Matteo said politely.

The car navigated the familiar streets of Brooklyn, coming to a halt before a corner building Maya knew by heart. She stepped out and froze in pure disbelief.

Sweet Haven Bakery stood before her. The peeling awning had been replaced with elegant plum-colored canvas. The display windows were immaculate, showing off state-of-the-art Italian convection ovens and gleaming marble countertops. Pinned to the center glass was a polished brass plaque: Sole Proprietor: Maya Bennett.

The front door chimed, and Dante walked out, wearing a simple white linen shirt with his sleeves rolled up. Resting on his hip was Sophia, giggling happily, wearing a tiny pink baker's apron around her waist.

"What... what is this?" Maya stammered, tears stinging her eyes.

"I bought the building and cleared the Rossis' remaining debts," Dante said, handing her a set of brass keys with a soft smile. "This isn't payment for services, Maya. It's an offering of gratitude to the woman who gave my daughter back her voice."
