Chapter 12 - The teddy bear captured the worst conversation
One recording lasted forty-three minutes.
Anouk had apparently pressed the button before being placed in the storage compartment.
The teddy remained near the door.
Voices outside were muffled but understandable.
Seraphina speaking to her agent.
“We need the December marriage before they will increase the option.”
Agent:
“You told them Maximilian was participating.”
“He will.”
“What about his daughter?”
Long pause.
Then Seraphina:
“She needs to be somewhere else.”
“Meaning?”
“School. Family. I don’t care.”
“You cannot structure a media deal around removing a six-year-old.”
“I’m not.”
“You just said—”
“I said she makes him impossible.”
Later:
Agent:
“What secrets are you actually offering?”
Seraphina:
“Enough to make him cooperate if he understands the alternative.”
That sentence mattered.
The agent answered immediately:
“No. Absolutely not. If you’re talking about threatening him with disclosure to force cooperation, I’m out.”
Seraphina:
“You’re being dramatic.”
Agent:
“I’m being a lawyer’s favorite client by not committing extortion on a recorded phone line.”
