Chapter 18 - Anouk asks whether I was really going to marry Seraphina

“Yes.”
She stared at me.
“Why?”
Children are brutal.
“I thought I loved her.”
“She mean.”
“I didn’t know she treated you like this.”
Anouk hugged Teddy.
“You didn’t ask.”
That landed.
“I asked how your day was.”
“She was there.”
Meaning:
Seraphina was often in the room during calls.
Of course.
I had asked questions in front of the person Anouk feared.
A child cannot answer freely while watching the adult she is reporting.
I said:
“I should have made space for you to talk to me alone.”
She nodded.
Then:
“You travel too much.”
Also true.
No criminal explanation needed.
I had built a life where absence was normal.
Seraphina used the gap.
May you like
That did not make her behavior my fault.
It did make the gap mine to repair.
