Chapter 6 - The first recordings

My attorney made a copy of the recorder before we listened extensively.

Why?

Because once the device might contain evidence, chain of custody mattered.

Also, recording laws vary.

Not every private recording automatically becomes admissible just because it exists.

Anouk had activated the recorder herself at several points.

Some clips were accidental.

Some deliberate messages to me.

The first relevant recording began with Anouk whispering:

“Daddy, Seraphina is mad again.”

Then fabric rustling.

Footsteps.

Seraphina’s voice:

“Turn that ridiculous thing off.”

Anouk:

“It’s Teddy.”

Seraphina:

“Your father isn’t listening.”

Then:

“He never listens unless money is involved.”

The clip ended.

Another:

Seraphina telling a housekeeper:

“Do not take food upstairs. She eats when I say.”

The housekeeper answered:

“Mr. Rourke said she eats at seven.”

Seraphina:

“Mr. Rourke isn’t here.”

That housekeeper later confirmed the conversation.

The recorder was not standing alone.

That mattered.
