Chapter 11 - My Father Gave Him What He Wanted

Dad’s punch became evidence too.

Of course it did.

Ethan photographed his face at the hospital.

Filed a police complaint.

His lawyer emphasized:

A retired Army colonel entered his home and struck him.

Factually true.

My father did not deny it.

He told police:

“I hit him because I saw what he did to my daughter.”

The detective asked:

“Was Mr. Caldwell attacking you at the moment you punched him?”

Dad answered:

“No.”

His attorney later nearly strangled him.

Verbally.

Dad refused to label the strike self-defense when it was retaliation.

That mattered.

His punch did not erase Ethan’s conduct.

Ethan’s conduct did not legalize Dad’s punch.

Two wrong acts could exist in the same living room.

The painful part was realizing Ethan had predicted Dad might lose control.

He had spent months saying Richard Hayes was violent.

Then built a situation where a protective father might behave exactly that way.

It did not make Dad a puppet.

He still chose the punch.

But Ethan understood him.

That was unsettling.
