Chapter 6 - The Photographs of Ethan

There were photographs too.
Ethan with a bruise on his shoulder.
A cut near his hairline.
Dark discoloration along one side of his ribs.
At first, I panicked.
Had I hurt him?
Memory becomes uncertain after months of being told you are the unstable one.
Then dates appeared.
One shoulder photograph was taken after Ethan fell during a recreational basketball game.
I remembered.
He came home laughing.
“You should see the other guy.”
There was no other guy.
He slipped.
The rib bruise came after a skiing trip.
His brother had photographs from the trip.
The small scalp cut came from a garage shelving accident.
None involved me.
But the folder did not say:
basketball.
skiing.
garage.
It said:
Injuries documented during period of escalating marital conflict.
Technically true.
Morally deceptive.
The photographs had been repurposed.
Not Photoshopped.
Not fabricated.

Reframed.
That theme would repeat throughout the case.
