Chapter 20 - Dad’s Case

My father faced his own consequences.

One punch.

No serious injury.

No prior record.

He accepted a misdemeanor diversion arrangement after counsel negotiated the matter.

Anger-management course.

Community service.

No new offenses.

Completion leading to the resolution available under the program.

He complained constantly.

“I spent thirty years controlling men with rifles.”

I answered:

“And then punched my husband in front of police.”

He sighed.

“Your mother would have enjoyed this.”

My mother had died seven years earlier.

Dad smiled despite himself.

Then became serious.

“I’m sorry.”

“For the punch?”

“For making it easier for him.”

I looked at him.

“You didn’t make him abuse me.”

“I know.”

“You didn’t create his files.”

“I know.”

“But you gave him one true thing.”

“Yes.”

I appreciated that distinction.

Dad was not responsible for Ethan’s scheme.

He was responsible for his own fist.

Accountability did not require swallowing someone else’s guilt.
