Chapter 25 - The Driveway Camera

Police eventually removed the camera facing Dad’s driveway.

Evidence first.

Then gone.

Dad became obsessed with checking utility poles.

Every walk:

“What’s that?”

“Transformer.”

“And that?”

“Bird.”

“That looks electronic.”

“It is a streetlight.”

Therapy eventually helped him too.

Hypervigilance is not protection when it never turns off.

One day he stopped scanning the road.

I noticed.

Said nothing.

He deserved to become ordinary again without applause.

The camera had once symbolized Ethan watching for Dad to move.

Years later, Dad installed his own visible security camera.

Legally.

On his property.

Pointed at his driveway.

He showed me the app.

“Want access?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I don’t need to know every time you take out the trash.”

“Fair.”

Boundaries.

We were getting better.
