Chapter 21 - Leaving the House

I never returned to live with Ethan.
At first I stayed with Dad.
Three days.
Then a week.
Then I realized something.
I was sleeping in my childhood bedroom.
Dad checked locks twice.
Asked where I was going.
Offered to drive everywhere.
Different intention.
Same feeling of being watched.
One evening:
“Dad.”
“What?”
“I need my own place.”
His face dropped.
“You don’t feel safe here?”
“I do.”
“Then why—”
“Because safe isn’t the same as independent.”
He stopped.
That sentence became important for both of us.
Two months later, I rented a small apartment.
Third floor.
No elevator.
Bad kitchen cabinets.
Excellent locks.
Dad hated the neighborhood parking.
I loved the apartment.
My name.

My lease.
My key.
