Chapter 9 - The Camera at Dad’s House

How had Ethan obtained the live view?
Not from Dad’s security system.
That would have been a much more serious cyber issue.
The truth was smaller and uglier.
A compact battery-powered camera had been placed on a utility pole easement across from Dad’s property.
It pointed toward the driveway.
Investigators later determined Ethan had installed it himself using an off-the-shelf device connected through a cellular data service.
I will not describe how.
He told police through counsel that he feared Dad might come to our house armed and wanted to know when Dad left home.
He called it:
“defensive monitoring.”
Dad called it:
“stalking.”
Lawyers debated statutory terminology.
I cared about something else.
Ethan had watched my father because he expected conflict.
Maybe wanted it.
The live feed on Easter meant he could see when Dad left his house.
He knew Dad was coming.
May you like
Yet he stayed.
That fact changed the way investigators interpreted the confrontation.
