Chapter 15 - Margaret Changes Her Story

Margaret eventually asked for a second interview.
Her attorney present.
She looked older.
Not dramatically.
Just tired.
She admitted Ethan had shown her selected clips.
She believed them.
Partly.
Then:
“I also knew he had grabbed Emily before.”
The detective asked:
“How?”
“I saw bruises.”
“Did Emily tell you what happened?”
“She said she bumped into things.”
“Did you believe her?”
Long silence.
“No.”
“Then why sign the declaration about Colonel Hayes?”
Margaret stared at her hands.
“Because Ethan said Richard was going to destroy the family.”
The detective asked:
“What did you think Ethan was doing?”
She answered:
“Protecting himself.”
“And Emily?”
Another silence.
“I told myself she was exaggerating.”
That phrase again.
Told myself.
People rarely describe complicity by saying:
May you like
I chose the cruel option.
They describe the story they used to live with it.
