Chapter 5 - The Packet

Police obtained a search warrant for Ethan’s study.

The live camera had shown enough in plain view to raise questions, but investigators still followed process before examining files in detail.

Inside the study they found a nearly complete petition seeking an emergency protective order against my father.

It alleged:

Richard Hayes had repeatedly threatened Ethan.

Richard attempted to control Emily’s marriage.

Richard surveilled the Caldwell residence.

Richard encouraged Emily to make false domestic-abuse allegations.

Richard had access to firearms and military training.

Richard presented an escalating danger.

Some statements were completely false.

Others were distortions of real events.

Dad once told Ethan:

“If you ever hurt my daughter, we will have a problem.”

True.

In Ethan’s packet, that became:

Richard Hayes threatened physical retaliation.

Dad once parked across the street for ten minutes after I canceled dinner while crying on the phone.

True.

He wanted to make sure I was home safely.

In the petition:

Richard conducted surveillance on our residence.

Dad called me several times after noticing a bruise.

True.

In the petition:

Richard repeatedly interfered with marital communications.

A dangerous narrative does not always need invented events.

Sometimes it only needs context removed.
