Chapter 13 - My father finally learned

I called him from the hospital.
Dad answered on the fourth ring.
“Lisa?”
“Hi.”
“What happened?”
“I need you not to do anything.”
Silence.
Military fathers hear that differently.
“What happened?”
“Evelyn hit me.”
Another silence.
“Ryan?”
“Watched.”
“Where are you?”
“Hospital.”
“I’m coming.”
“No.”
“Lisa.”
“Dad, this is exactly why I’m calling. Do not call the base. Do not call anybody in uniform. Do not call Aegis. You are my father right now. Nothing else.”
He breathed slowly.
Then:
“Are you safe?”
“Yes.”
“Are you seriously hurt?”
“No.”
“Do you want me there?”
I started crying.
“Yes.”
May you like
“I’ll be there.”
That was the only authority I needed from him.
