Chapter 9 - Evelyn’s rank obsession

Evelyn had never served in the military.
Her husband had.
Colonel Thomas Carter spent twenty-seven years in the Army.
Evelyn had spent those decades inside military communities.
Deployments.
Moves.
Ceremonies.
Command receptions.
Family-readiness events.
She had worked hard.
Sacrificed.
Held households together.
None of that gave her military rank.
But after Thomas died, something strange happened.
She began talking as though his status had transferred to her.
She would say:
“We were command.”
Or:
“Families knew where they stood.”
Once, during dinner, she told me:
“Your father may have worn stars, but Thomas actually understood soldiers.”
I answered:
“I’m sure both men had strengths.”
Wrong response.
She wanted rivalry.
I refused to give it to her.
Then my work investigation touched Ryan’s company.
Suddenly every conversation became:
Respect.
Loyalty.
Chain of command.
Family.

And Evelyn’s favorite sentence:
“You need to remember who you married into.”
