Chapter 24 - Dad asks whether I want revenge

Months later, Dad and I sat on my apartment balcony.
He asked:
“Do you want to know what I wanted to do when you called?”
“No.”
“Good.”
We sat quietly.
Then:
“Do you hate them?”
“Some days.”
“Useful?”
“No.”
He nodded.
My father had spent decades teaching young officers about mission discipline.
Then his daughter had to remind him:
Do not intervene outside the system.
He admitted that.
“You did something I’m not sure I could have done at twenty-nine.”
“What?”
“Walk out.”
I looked at him.
May you like
“I got hit first.”
“Still counts.”
