Chapter 17 - The ceremonial baton

The baton had been presented to Colonel Carter during his retirement ceremony.
After the assault case, Evelyn wanted it returned.
Ryan wanted it kept in the family.
I wanted nothing to do with it.
Eventually, after evidentiary release, Thomas Carter’s brother received it.
He called me.
“Lisa, Thomas would have hated what happened.”
I said:
“I know.”
Did I actually know?
Not perfectly.
I had known Thomas for only two years before he died.
But he had once told Evelyn at Thanksgiving:
May you like
“Stop using my rank to win civilian arguments.”
So I had a clue.
