Chapter 23 - The marriage

I filed for divorce nine days after Evelyn hit me.
Ryan accused me of abandoning him during a crisis.
I answered through counsel.
Our divorce involved:
House.
Retirement accounts.
CFL ownership.
Debt.
No children.
That simplified one part.
Emotionally, nothing was simple.
Ryan wrote:
I froze.
Maybe.
Then:
I didn’t know Mom would actually hit you.
Possible.
Then:
I thought you were destroying everything we built.
There.
That sentence was the closest he came to honesty.
He believed the business was:
Everything we built.
May you like
I had believed the marriage was.
We had not been protecting the same thing.
