Chapter 4 - “The General’s daughter”

I hated what he said next.
“Evelyn Carter, we need you to come with us for harming the General’s daughter.”
I looked at him.
“Officer.”
He realized immediately.
Bad phrasing.
Later he apologized.
The problem was not that I was General Whitmore’s daughter.
The problem was that Evelyn had hit a person with a heavy object.

The sentence came from shock and familiarity.
He had served under one of Dad’s commands early in his career.
Evelyn seized on it immediately.
“Of course.”
Grant frowned.
“What?”
“This is James.”
I said:
“My father doesn’t know you’re here.”
She laughed bitterly.
“He always knows.”
He didn’t.
Dad was fishing in Tennessee.
