Chapter 3 - They were already on the way

The investigators did not magically materialize because I pressed one button.
They were already nearby.
That distinction matters.
Two weeks earlier, I had contacted outside counsel assigned to a joint Department of Defense contractor-integrity review.
The matter involved:
Billing.
Base access.
Emergency procurement.
Potential undisclosed related-party transactions.
I had agreed to meet investigators that afternoon at a secure office.
Then Ryan convinced me to stop by Evelyn’s house first.
“Mom has documents you’re going to misunderstand if you don’t hear her side.”
I went.
Bad decision.
Before entering, I texted the investigator:
Meeting may become confrontational. I’ll send final file if necessary.
The message I sent after Evelyn hit me contained:
A preserved document archive.
My written compliance timeline.
And one line:
Physical confrontation. Leaving now.
The military police unit was involved because Evelyn’s house sat in privatized residential property inside the installation boundary where her late husband had retained housing eligibility through a special transition arrangement.
Civilian detectives were there because the underlying financial investigation crossed outside entities too.
Officer Daniel Grant reached the house first.
He saw my face.
Then the baton.
Then Ryan.

His voice hardened.
“Everybody stay where you are.”
