Chapter 14 - Dad and Officer Grant

When Dad arrived, Officer Grant was still completing paperwork nearby.
They recognized each other.
Grant straightened instinctively.
Dad said:
“Don’t.”
Grant relaxed.
Then apologized to me.
“I shouldn’t have called you ‘the General’s daughter’ in the house.”
Dad looked confused.
I said:
“He got dramatic.”
Grant smiled slightly.
“I did.”
Then Dad asked:
“Did my name affect anything here?”
Grant answered:
“No, sir.”
Dad:
“Good.”
Then:
“And don’t call me sir.”
Grant:
May you like
“That may take longer.”
It was the first time I laughed that night.
