Chapter 25 - Brian apologizes without asking for money

He came to my condo five months after my birthday.
Carrying nothing.
No cake.
No dramatic envelope.
I let him in.
He looked around.
“This is nice.”
“It is.”
“Smaller.”
“Wonderful, isn’t it?”
He smiled slightly.
Then sat.
“Dad, I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
He knew this was a test.
“The dog bowl.”
“Continue.”
“For laughing about you living free when I knew you paid for things.”
“Continue.”
“For swinging at you.”
“Continue.”
He looked down.
“For treating your help like it was automatic.”
Better.
Then:
“I didn’t know how much Melissa charged you.”
“I believe that.”
He looked surprised.
“That doesn’t clear you.”
“I know.”
Good.
Then:
“Are you and Melissa divorcing?”
“I don’t know.”
Fair.

He did not ask for money.
That helped more than tears.
