Chapter 4 - Police arrive

A guest called police.
Reasonable.
One old man had thrown a bowl.
One adult son had lunged.
One punch followed.
No one should expect a birthday table to sort criminal law itself.
Officer Dana Morales separated us.
I told her everything.
“Did you throw the bowl?”
“Yes.”
“Did it strike Brian?”
“The food did. Maybe the bowl clipped his shoulder. I’m not certain.”
Brian had a small scrape near one temple.
Could have come from kibble bowl.
Could have come from table.
Photographed.
Then:
“Did Brian punch you?”
“He tried.”
“Did the fist make contact?”
“No.”
“What did you do?”
“Blocked him and struck once.”
Witnesses largely agreed.
One guest said:
“Brian definitely swung first.”
Another:
“I couldn’t see Walter’s hands.”
Melissa said:
“Walter attacked him.”
Video?
She had recorded the dog-food joke.
Her phone kept recording into part of confrontation.
It showed Brian stepping toward me with an arm raised.
Not perfect angle.
Enough to support my account.
Police did not arrest anyone at dinner.
Reports sent for review.
I packed a suitcase.
Not because Brian had successfully evicted me in thirty seconds.
Because I no longer wanted to sleep under that roof.
I stayed at my cousin Leonard’s house.
Before leaving, Melissa said:
“You’re being dramatic.”
I answered:
“You charged me $5,850 last month.”
May you like
Her face changed.
That was the moment I knew the charge was not an innocent mistake.
