Chapter 3 - The pending payment

Brian’s phone alert was not about the recurring charge.

It was about the payment I canceled.

$18,700.

For a new roof.

Their roof.

A month earlier, Brian said:

“Insurance won’t cover the full replacement.”

I offered to help.

Not the whole amount.

The contractor required a second-stage payment after materials arrived.

I authorized:

$18,700.

Scheduled for my birthday morning.

Then the dog bowl.

Then:

“You live here for free.”

So I canceled it before final processing.

Could I legally cancel?

The payment was from my account.

The contractor had not yet completed the milestone.

My name was not on Brian’s roofing contract.

My bank confirmed cancellation window remained open.

Could Brian still owe contractor?

Yes.

That was between Brian and the company.

I told him:

“You called me a freeloader while I was paying for your roof.”

Melissa said:

“That’s different.”

“How?”

“It was a gift.”

“Then say thank you.”

Brian’s face reddened.

“We don’t need your money.”

I held up the phone.

May you like

“Excellent.”

Then why had he panicked when it stopped?
