Chapter 1 - She Is Three

My name is Sylvester Hale.
I was seventy years old when I opened a garden gate and found my three-year-old granddaughter kneeling on cold stone tiles.
Lily was tiny.
Pale-blue dress.
Simple flats.
Light-brown hair falling across her wet cheeks.
Beside her lay an overturned terracotta flower pot.
Dark soil had spilled across the patio.
A cluster of white flowers rested on its side.
Lily pushed one small hand against the stone.
Tried to stand.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Stay there.”
Lily froze.
My daughter Vanessa was thirty-nine.
Perfect hair.
Diamond earrings.
Expensive clothes.
Controlled posture.
To strangers, she looked elegant.
In that moment, she looked like a woman standing over a child who was afraid to move without permission.
Daniel Mercer stood several feet away.
Thirty-six.
Tailored suit.
Luxury watch.
The man Vanessa had been dating for almost two years.
He watched Lily wipe tears from her face.
Then gave a small laugh.
Not loud.
Almost worse.
Lily looked toward the locked garden gate.
She was shaking.
Then I opened it.
I stood there with two men from my security company several feet behind me.
They were there because I had come directly from a business meeting.
Not because I expected trouble.
Not because anyone needed intimidation.
The gate opened.
Lily looked up.
Her whole face changed.
“Grandpa!”
I walked onto the patio.
Vanessa’s expression collapsed for half a second.
Daniel straightened.
I looked down at Lily’s palms against the cold stone.
Then at the adults standing above her.
I did not raise my voice.
I did not need to.
I knelt slightly.
Held out one hand.
“Come here, sweetheart.”
Lily immediately tried to stand.
Vanessa moved between us.
Not touching me.
Blocking her.
“She needs consequences.”
I slowly rose.
All the way.

Then looked my daughter directly in the eyes.
“She is three.”
