Chapter 16 - Daniel’s Mocking Laugh

Daniel apologized for the patio.

Not immediately.

Months later.

He said:

“I shouldn’t have laughed.”

No.

He should not have.

“Why did you?”

He looked uncomfortable.

“Because the situation seemed ridiculous.”

“What was ridiculous?”

“The flower pot.”

“Then why laugh at Lily?”

“I wasn’t laughing at her.”

The video disagreed.

He watched her crying.

Then smiled.

Perhaps nerves.

Perhaps contempt.

Perhaps both.

He eventually said:

“I had gotten used to thinking of every incident as evidence.”

That was the first insight I respected.

Evidence.

Lily stopped being a child spilling soil.
