Chapter 12 - Daniel Was Not Her Father

Daniel increasingly behaved like one.
That was part of the problem.
He corrected Lily.
Set bedtime.
Handled preschool pickups.
None of that is inherently wrong for a long-term partner.
But he began speaking for her.
At one evaluation meeting:
“She needs stricter structure.”
The guardian asked:
“What is your legal relationship to Lily?”
Daniel paused.
“I’m effectively her stepfather.”
“You are not married to Vanessa.”
“Not yet.”
“That means currently?”
“Her mother’s partner.”
He disliked that correction.
Later he said:
“Sylvester acts like I’m nobody.”
I answered:
May you like
“No. I act like your role should be accurate.”
Accuracy sounded insulting to people who wanted authority ahead of legal or relational reality.
