Chapter 19 - The Guardian’s Recommendation

Rachel Monroe’s report was not a victory speech for me.

Good.

She recommended Vanessa remain Lily’s primary parent.

That surprised some relatives.

It did not surprise me.

Vanessa loved her daughter.

Provided daily care.

Maintained medical appointments.

Attended preschool events.

Had no history of serious physical abuse.

One inappropriate disciplinary episode and a pattern of exaggerated behavioral reporting did not automatically justify taking a three-year-old from her mother.

But Rachel also found the relocation proposal insufficiently child-centered as originally presented.

She recommended either:

Delay relocation.

Or create a much stronger long-distance contact structure preserving Lily’s relationships with both paternal grandparents.

She also recommended:

Parenting education.

Individual therapy for Vanessa.

Clear limits on Daniel’s disciplinary authority until marriage and further family work.

No forced kneeling.

No corporal punishment.

Developmentally appropriate consequences.

Shared access to relevant preschool and pediatric information.

And:

Both sides stop treating Lily’s behavior as evidence in adult conflict.

That included me.

I had become hypervigilant too.

Every bruise.

Every phrase.

Every hesitation.

I could turn into the opposing version of the same problem.

Rachel warned:

May you like

“Do not interrogate her after transitions.”

I stopped.
