Chapter 13 - Perry thought the closet was his new bedroom

This was the worst consequence.
At my sister Mae’s house, Perry asked:
“Am I going to live in laundry?”
I sat down.
“No.”
“Daddy put blanket there.”
“For a calm-down space.”
“Grandma locked it.”
“I know.”
“Tomorrow custody means I live there?”
My chest hurt.
He had heard enough adult conversation to connect everything incorrectly.
I said:
“You are not going to live in a closet.”
“Promise?”
“Yes.”
“Do I have to live with Grandma?”
“No one is making that decision tonight.”
He started crying.
I pulled him close.
Children hear the vocabulary adults throw around.
Custody.
Schedule.
Primary.
Temporary.
They do not hear legal nuance.
They hear:
Where will I sleep?
May you like
Who wants me?
Who is leaving?
