Chapter 19 - Reid loses the managing-partner promotion

Not because the firm punished him for having family problems.

Because the process uncovered another issue.

Martin Shaw and the committee learned Reid had used a client-development dinner in his home while privately under enormous family stress and had tried to control the environment through inappropriate child discipline.

They questioned judgment.

More importantly:

Reid himself withdrew.

He told the committee:

“I am not in position to take on more responsibility right now.”

The firm appointed another partner.

Did Reid lose money?

Yes.

Estimated first-year compensation difference:

Around $480,000.

Did the company collapse?

No.

Did colleagues blacklist him?

No.

He remained senior partner.

Some respected the withdrawal.

Some thought he damaged his future.

Both may have been true.
