Chapter 22 - Constance’s real fear

During family mediation months later, Constance said something unexpected.

“I thought you were going to take Perry away from us.”

I asked:

“Why?”

“Because Reid told me you were considering separation.”

I looked at Reid.

He nodded.

Constance continued:

“I knew if you left, you would control access.”

“So you helped plan the ninety-day custody arrangement.”

“I encouraged him to keep the house and school routine.”

“And you believed that meant you kept Perry.”

Her silence answered.

There.

Her behavior had not been only about dinner guests.

She was already imagining a future where Perry’s home base remained inside the Harrow structure.

The closet was the extreme version of her worldview:

Perry stays where the Harrows decide he stays.

Even when he wants out.
