Chapter 4 - Perry had been in the closet before

Not locked.

That distinction mattered.

Three days earlier, Reid had used the laundry room as what he called:

“A calm-down space.”

Perry had become loud during a phone call.

Reid sent him inside with the door open.

Blanket.

Pillow.

Ten minutes.

Then let him out.

Perry disliked it.

But was not trapped.

I had been at work late.

I knew nothing.

The next day Reid placed the blanket back there.

Why?

“Consistency.”

That was his word.

Then he told Constance:

“If Perry gets wound up during Thursday dinner, use the quiet room. Don’t let him come back out until he is calm.”

Constance asked:

“What if he keeps opening the door?”

Reid replied:

“Use the top latch.”

That message existed.

He had texted it.

The laundry door had an exterior childproof slide latch installed years earlier to keep Perry out when cleaning chemicals were stored there.

The chemicals had since been moved.

The latch remained.

Reid knew.

Constance used it.

No mystery.

No misunderstanding.

He had authorized confinement.
