Chapter 1 - Hair in the snow

My name is Joanna Miller.

The image I remember most is not my father-in-law falling.

It is not Lydia standing in the doorway.

It is not even my daughter’s shaved head.

It is the hair.

Little brown curls scattered across white snow.

Louisa was three.

Three-year-olds lose shoes.

They spill juice.

They hide crackers in toy boxes.

They do not understand accusations like:

Theft.

Deception.

Family shame.

Yet that morning, my mother-in-law had decided Louisa needed to learn a lesson about all three.

I reached her beside the stone wall.

Her wrists had been loosely bound with a scarf.

Not tight enough to leave serious injury.

Tight enough that she could not simply walk away.

Her bare feet were pink from cold.

She looked at me.

“Mommy… I didn’t take anything.”

I knew immediately she believed nobody else had believed her.

That hurt more than anything.
