Chapter 3 - Heather’s accusation

Heather Miller was thirty.
David’s younger sister.
She looked at Louisa and asked:
“Where did you put Grandma’s bracelet?”
Louisa said:
“I didn’t.”
Heather crouched.
“Sweetie, nobody is angry if you tell us.”
“I didn’t.”
Lydia joined.
“You were touching things.”
“No.”
Walter said:
“Children lie when they’re frightened.”
I stepped in.
“She is three.”
Heather answered:
“Exactly. Maybe she took something shiny without understanding.”
That was plausible.
A child might.
So I searched Louisa’s backpack myself.
Nothing.
Pockets.
Nothing.
Toy bag.
Nothing.
I said:
“She doesn’t have it.”
Lydia replied:
“Then she hid it.”
The accusation transformed.
From possible accident.
May you like
To deliberate theft.
Without evidence.
