Chapter 17 - Heather’s theft charge

Heather faced charges connected to the bracelet.
But the bracelet was family property she intended to return.
Her defense argued:
No permanent deprivation intended.
That complicated a classic theft theory.
Prosecutors instead focused strongly on:
Evidence of deception.
False accusation.
Contributing to child endangerment.
Her role in creating the circumstances that led to Louisa’s abuse.
Ultimately she pleaded to:
A misdemeanor theft-related count under the available theory.
False reporting/concealment-related conduct.
And a child-endangerment-related count based on knowingly allowing the false accusation to continue after Lydia escalated.

No felony conspiracy to torture a child.
Evidence did not support that.
