Chapter 12 - David came home

My husband drove back that evening.

He walked into my sister’s house where Louisa and I were staying.

Saw his daughter.

Stopped.

Her head had been cleaned.

Doctor applied soothing treatment to superficial clipper irritation.

She wore warm pajamas and a knitted cap she chose herself.

David knelt.

“Baby.”

Louisa stared at him.

Then said:

“Grandma said thief.”

David started crying.

I had seen him cry twice before.

Our wedding.

Louisa’s birth.

This was different.

He looked at me.

“I told you Mom would calm down.”

“Yes.”

“I left you there with them.”

“No. I did.”

He shook his head.

May you like

“I told you it was safe.”

That guilt almost destroyed our marriage in a different way.
