Chapter 9 - Leave what?

I did not understand.
Leave what?
The house?
The family?
David?
Then I remembered the property dispute.
Six months earlier, David’s grandfather died.
He left a lake house in Michigan and several investment accounts.
Most assets passed cleanly.
One issue did not.
The old family home where Lydia and Walter lived was held through a trust.
The trust allowed them lifetime occupancy.
After both died or voluntarily moved out, ownership would pass:
50% to David.
50% to Heather.
Simple.
Except the trust also contained an option.
If one sibling wanted to buy the other’s future interest while the parents were alive, they could negotiate based on an independent appraisal.
Heather wanted David’s share.
David did not want to sell.
Then he said something fatal at Thanksgiving:
“Honestly, if Joanna and Louisa ever wanted the house someday, I’d rather keep it.”
Heather heard:
May you like
Joanna and Louisa are taking my house.
That resentment grew quietly.
