Chapter 12

Grace stood perfectly still, her posture entirely relaxed yet projecting an unyielding readiness. She did not flinch or look away from the billionaire’s razor-sharp gaze. "I was dispatched here by the premier domestic staffing agency three weeks ago, Mr. Caldwell."
"A standard maid does not possess the situational awareness to identify camera blind spots, the combat reflexes of a special operative, and certainly not the ability to execute a devastating, millimeter-perfect mid-air strike to neutralize a threat," Ethan stepped closer, his deep voice dropping into a low, interrogative rumble. "Who planted you here? Who do you work for?"
Grace took a slow, deep breath. The mild, unassuming facade of the quiet servant was completely shed, replaced by the chilling, hyper-focused demeanor of someone intimately acquainted with life and death. "I work for myself, Mr. Caldwell. And prior to this, I worked for an agency whose name you do not have the clearance to know."
Her absolute bluntness made Ethan pause. He was accustomed to people cowering and bowing before his immense wealth, but this woman radiated absolute, untouchable independence.
"Your background check stated you were a part-time martial arts instructor living in Queens, working double shifts to open a bakery," Ethan frowned, searching her face for cracks.
"The part about the bakery is entirely true," Grace replied, the faintest ghost of a smile touching her lips. "The rest was cover. I walked away from military intelligence two years ago after a severely compromised operation in Eastern Europe. I chose cleaning and serving in sprawling estates to remain invisible."
"Then why did you intervene tonight?" Ethan asked, his tone softening slightly but retaining its suspicion. "You could have walked away, but you risked your entire cover to save my niece."
"Because people like Sabrina and Vance disgust me," Grace answered, the temperature in the room plummeting. "I watched how they controlled Lily. That child wasn't mute from trauma; she was chemically imprisoned, sedated every single day with a compound slipped into her evening milk. If you had signed those marital trusts tomorrow morning, Lily would have been nothing more than a pawn to manipulate your assets, and she likely would have never woken up."
Ethan’s eyes dropped, overwhelming agony and guilt flooding his features. "I was so incredibly blind. I truly believed Sabrina could offer the maternal comfort Lily was missing... I almost allowed my niece to be murdered under my own roof."
"You do not have the luxury of self-pity right now, Mr. Caldwell," Grace stepped forward, resting her hands on his desk. "Sabrina and Vance are merely the visible tip of the iceberg. After I neutralized Sabrina, I spotted a handler in a black suit making an encrypted call by the secondary bar. There is a highly professional syndicate backing the Vales. They are targeting your empire, and they will not stop simply because one engagement fell apart."

Ethan looked up, the brilliant corporate shark instantly returning. "What do you want, Grace? You saved Lily’s life. I can write you a check large enough to open fifty bakeries and vanish."
"I want you to hire me," Grace stated clearly. "Officially. As Lily’s personal executive protection. I do not trust a single man on your current security detail. If you want to keep her safe from the wolves circling this house, you need someone who can smell the blood before it even crosses the threshold."
