Chapter 28

Winter arrived in New York City, bringing the first light flurries of snow that blanketed the streets in pristine white. Sweet Haven Bakery was beautifully and warmly decorated with twinkling golden lights, fresh wreaths, and a dazzling Christmas tree standing proudly in the corner. Inside, the air was warmed by the intoxicating scents of spicy cinnamon, crisp gingerbread cookies, and rich, sweet hot chocolate. This was Maya’s first holiday season since she had officially become the true owner of this stunning establishment.
From early morning, customers had been bustling in and out, bringing bright smiles and cheerful holiday greetings. However, this afternoon was incredibly special. The bakery hung a "Closing Early" sign to prepare for a cozy, private birthday party dedicated entirely to Sophia—the little princess who was officially turning six today.

There were no men in black suits with cold, assassin-like faces. The only guests present were the friendly bakery staff, Mr. and Mrs. Rossi—the beloved former owners of Sweet Haven—and a few close friends.
Sophia wore a vibrant red velvet princess dress, a small, sparkling diamond tiara resting in her bouncy brown curls. She closed her eyes tightly, clasped her hands to make a wish, and joyfully blew out the flickering candles on the giant, three-tiered strawberry shortcake that Maya had stayed up meticulously crafting just for her. Dante stood right beside her, smiling with overwhelming tenderness at his precious daughter. His pale gray eyes, once razor-sharp and cold, now reflected only the warm, flickering candlelight and an ocean of boundless love for his family.
