Chapter 40

The first rays of dawn broke across the Tuscan horizon, bathing the battered sandstone villa in golden light. Smoke from the extinguished skirmish curled harmlessly into the morning breeze as Matteo’s medical team stabilized Elena on a stretcher in the courtyard. The bullet had missed her heart by inches. Matteo had already transmitted the encrypted ledger to federal authorities, triggering a sweeping raid that apprehended Nikolai Volkov in Vienna before sunrise.
Maya stood on the dew-kissed lawn, holding Sophia close while Dante remained by her side, his arm wrapped securely around her waist. Elena looked at the little girl one last time, tears of redemption shimmering in her dark eyes. Sophia walked forward and gently placed a small white daisy into Elena’s trembling hand. "Thank you for helping my daddy," Sophia whispered sweetly. Elena kissed the child's forehead, whispering a silent goodbye before letting her return to Maya’s waiting arms.

"Take good care of each other," Elena said softly to Maya as the medical transport prepared to depart for an undisclosed sanctuary under federal protection. Maya smiled through her tears, nodding with heartfelt grace.
As the transport rolled down the gravel drive, Dante pulled Maya tight against his chest, their fingers intertwined over her rounded belly. The ghosts of the past were finally laid to rest, and in their place bloomed a future anchored in unbreakable love and everlasting peace.
