Chapter 46

The morning sun rose over the Tuscan hills, casting long, golden rays across the dew-kissed vineyards. Inside the villa, the heavy, oppressive tension of the night had lifted slightly, though the armed enforcers remained fiercely vigilant at their posts. Maya stood in the bright, modern kitchen, humming softly as she prepared a warm bottle of milk for Leo, who babbled happily in his high chair. The illusion of absolute normalcy was vital; she refused to let the shadows of Vieri’s ambition darken her children’s morning.
Dante walked into the kitchen, his dark hair slightly disheveled from a sleepless night of coordinating cyber-attacks. He wrapped his arms around Maya’s waist, burying his face in the crook of her neck, breathing in the scent of vanilla and safety.
"The police are holding Vieri’s men without bail," Dante murmured against her skin. "And our tech team successfully penetrated the Cyprus servers. We have seized Vieri’s operational liquidity."
"So it’s over?" Maya asked, turning in his arms to look up into his exhausted but victorious gray eyes. "He has no money, and his men are in jail."
"Men like Vieri do not surrender gracefully," Dante replied, his expression sobering. "He will try to negotiate. He will try to salvage his pride."
Right on cue, the encrypted satellite phone resting on the marble island began to vibrate, its harsh, mechanical buzz cutting through the quiet morning. The caller ID displayed a blocked international number. Dante exchanged a profound, meaningful look with Maya before picking up the device.
"Lorenzo Vieri," Dante greeted, his voice an iceberg of absolute calm and terrifying authority.
"Dante Russo," a smooth, cultured, and immensely arrogant voice replied through the speaker. "I must admit, your little parlor trick with the carabinieri last night was mildly impressive. And freezing my offshore accounts? A bold move for a man who claims to be retired."
"I am retired from senseless violence, Lorenzo. I am not retired from defending what is mine," Dante stated coldly. "You have lost your vanguard and your treasury. Withdraw your claim on the South Docks, or I will hand the digital evidence of your money laundering empire over to Interpol before noon."
A low, chilling chuckle echoed through the phone. "You think you hold all the cards, Dante. But you are fighting a localized war. The Golden Circle is global. You may have drained my Cyprus accounts, but my true wealth is insulated. And while you were busy playing hacker in your wine cellar, I dispatched a secondary extraction team. They aren't mercenaries, Dante. They are Phantoms."

Dante’s blood ran cold. The Phantoms were a highly classified, deniable black-ops unit formed from ex-military ghosts. They were lethal, invisible, and completely unbound by traditional rules of engagement.
"They will be at your gates by nightfall," Vieri promised, his voice dripping with malice. "Surrender the ports, Dante. Or watch your beautiful Tuscan sanctuary burn to ash."
