Chapter 55

The heavy rain that had plagued Manhattan for two days finally cleared, leaving behind a crisp, starry autumn night that glistened against the soaring glass towers of Park Avenue. Inside the magnificent grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the annual Vanguard Charity Gala was underway—a gathering of North America’s most powerful figures, including high-ranking government officials, international diplomats, and corporate titans.

The air was thick with the scent of white gardenias, expensive champagne, and subtle high-society perfume. A forty-piece chamber orchestra played soft classical waltzes from a marble balcony overlooking the floor, while crystal chandeliers cast brilliant, sparkling light across rows of polished mahogany tables and exquisite floral displays.

Sitting at a central table near the grand fountain were Dante and Maya Russo.

They were, without question, the visual anchors of the room. Dante looked breathtakingly imposing in a bespoke black tuxedo crafted from fine Italian wool, a crisp white dress shirt buttoned with onyx studs, and his luxury watch gleaming under the chandelier light. His dark brown hair was impeccably styled, his sharp masculine jawline clean, his piercing pale gray eyes calm yet fiercely observant.

Beside him, Maya was a vision of royal elegance. She wore a breathtaking champagne-gold silk couture gown that flowed effortlessly to the floor, featuring delicate lace embroidery along the fitted bodice and puffed ruffled sleeves. Her dark chestnut hair was swept up in an elegant updo, framed by small diamond drop earrings that caught the light with every subtle movement. Resting proudly against her collarbone was a delicate silver chain holding a small, polished pendant—a quiet reminder of the resilience that had brought her from a Brooklyn counter to the heights of global society.

Sitting across the room at a secluded VIP table was Lord Julian Sterling.

The disgraced aristocrat looked pale and visibly aged, his silver-gray hair disheveled despite his expensive tuxedo. Though he tried to maintain his arrogant posture, his blue eyes darted nervously toward Dante every few minutes. The news of Aegis Global's legal defeat and the loss of the Brooklyn commercial block had already rippled through the subterranean networks of the Golden Circle. Sterling was no longer seen as an untouchable titan; he was a liability on the verge of being purged by his own council.

Matteo walked up behind Dante's chair, leaning down to speak into his ear in a low, conspiratorial whisper. "Boss, we just intercepted a high-frequency satellite transmission from Zurich. The Golden Circle's supreme board has formally rejected Sterling’s request for emergency capital. They’ve given him until midnight to resolve his legal exposures... or face total liquidation."

Dante took a slow sip of vintage champagne, his expression unreadable. "Sterling is cornered, Matteo. A cornered predator doesn't retreat; it makes a desperate, foolish strike. Maintain maximum security around Maya and keep the private jet at JFK primed for immediate takeoff."

"Understood, Boss," Matteo nodded, stepping back into the crowd.

Maya leaned closer to Dante, resting her warm hand on his knee beneath the tablecloth. "He’s going to try something tonight, isn't he?"

Dante turned to look into her expressive brown eyes, his hand covering hers with an unbreakable, protective warmth. "He has no choices left, Maya. He failed to buy the bakery, he failed to intimidate us in court, and his own council has abandoned him. Tonight, he will try to pull us down with him."

"Let him try," Maya said softly, a calm, courageous smile gracing her lips. "We survived the Barone family, we survived Volkov's assassins, and we survived the Tuscan siege. Julian Sterling is just a shadow fading in the dark."

Suddenly, the chamber orchestra paused, and a distinguished master of ceremonies stepped up to the crystal podium at the front of the ballroom to introduce the evening’s keynote address on international heritage preservation.

As the polite applause echoed through the hall, Lord Julian Sterling slowly stood up from his table. He did not look at the speaker. Instead, he reached inside his tuxedo jacket, pulled out a small, high-frequency signal detonator concealed within a gold pen casing, and pressed his thumb firmly against the top button.

A quiet, mechanical CLICK rang out from his hand.

Instantly, the massive crystal chandeliers overhead flickered violently, and the entire grand ballroom was plunged into complete, suffocating darkness.
