Chapter 18

While Grace and Ethan were fighting for survival in the dark, flooding subterranean tunnels of the prison, the Caldwell estate remained eerily silent, locked down under Thomas’s strict command. The security protocols had been elevated to maximum alert following the discovery of the encrypted bug in Lily’s bedroom.

Lily sat quietly in the reinforced safe room in the West Wing, drawing pictures with her crayons. She was no longer drawing the chaotic, dark scribbles of a chemically suppressed mind. Her drawings were now filled with vibrant, lively colors: a bright blue sky, a beautiful flower garden, and the striking image of a woman with long brown hair executing a mid-air kick to protect a little girl.

Thomas entered the room, carrying a silver tray with warm milk and freshly baked cookies. "You draw beautifully, little miss," the old butler smiled warmly, his eyes shining with profound relief to see the life finally returning to Lily's face.

Lily looked up at Thomas, her small lips parting slightly. "Mr. Thomas... is Grace coming back?"

Her voice was clear, soft, and heartbreakingly sweet. Tears welled in Thomas’s eyes. It had been six months since he had last heard the child speak. "Yes, little miss. Grace is the strongest person I have ever met. She went with Mr. Caldwell to deal with the bad men. They will both return very soon."

Outside the main gates of the estate, a heavy commercial delivery truck rolled up to the guardhouse. The driver, wearing a standard catering uniform, rolled down his window and handed his manifest to the armed sentry.

"Weekly organic grocery delivery for the main kitchens," the driver mumbled, pulling his baseball cap low to obscure his face.

The sentry scanned the barcode; the paperwork was perfectly legitimate. However, he remembered Grace’s absolute, uncompromising orders before she left: No exceptions. Every single vehicle entering the premises must be scanned with thermal optics and explosive trace detectors.

"Please step out of the vehicle so we can inspect the cargo hold," the sentry ordered strictly, signaling for two other guards to approach with scanners.

The driver smirked, a chilling, cold smile. He suddenly slammed the accelerator to the floor. The heavy truck roared, smashing violently through the steel barricades and tearing straight into the estate grounds.

"Intruder! We have a breach!" the sentry roared over the radio, drawing his weapon and firing repeatedly into the truck's tires.

The heavy truck skidded wildly across the manicured lawn, crashing directly into the central marble fountain. The rear cargo doors burst open, and dozens of masked mercenaries armed with heavy assault weapons poured out, unleashing a devastating storm of bullets upon the estate's defensive line.

The mysterious organization had decided to launch a preemptive, decapitating strike directly against Ethan Caldwell’s headquarters. Their sole objective: abduct Lily to blackmail Ethan into surrendering total control of his shipping ports.

The deafening roar of gunfire shattered the quiet suburban night. Thomas heard the explosions from the safe room, the color draining entirely from his face. He immediately locked the secondary steel deadbolts and hit the emergency lockdown button, which dropped heavy armored shutters over every window in the wing.

"Lily, get under the bed, now!" Thomas ordered. He drew a heavy revolver from inside his tailored jacket and stood squarely in front of the reinforced door, radiating the unbreakable resolve of a military veteran. The Caldwell estate was officially at war.
