Chapter 43

The transition from a peaceful Tuscan evening to a highly fortified military posture happened with silent, chilling efficiency. Sophia sat on the edge of the terracotta planters, her sketchbook resting on her knees, watching the subtle but undeniable changes around the estate. The friendly gardeners who usually pruned the red geraniums had been replaced by Matteo’s elite, plainclothes enforcers. They moved with lethal grace, checking blind spots and establishing overlapping fields of surveillance.
Sophia wasn't a naive child anymore. She remembered the blinding red emergency strobes, the deafening gunfire, and the night she hid in the subterranean vault while her father fought the bad men. She closed her sketchbook and walked toward the grand archway of the courtyard, where Matteo was calibrating a thermal drone.
"Are we in danger again, Uncle Matteo?" Sophia asked, her voice remarkably steady.
Matteo paused, looking down at the young girl. He saw so much of Dante’s sharp intelligence and Elena’s resilient spirit in her expressive eyes. "Your father is handling it, Sophia. It’s just a precaution. A storm is passing over, and we are making sure the roof doesn't leak."
"You don't need to lie to me," Sophia replied gently, crossing her arms. "I saw the encryption screens in the study. The numbers were glowing red. Someone is trying to take our home away."
Before Matteo could formulate a comforting lie, Dante stepped out from the courtyard shadows. He wore a simple dark sweater, but the aura of command radiating from him was absolute. He knelt down so he was at eye level with his daughter.
"No one is taking our home, Sophia," Dante said with profound sincerity, placing a warm hand on her shoulder. "But you are right. There are people who want to test our strength. I need you to be incredibly brave right now. I need you to help Maya watch over Leo, and I need you to promise me you will not leave the inner perimeter of the villa."
"I promise, Daddy," Sophia said, her blue eyes shining with a fierce, protective love. "Are you going to have to hurt them?"
Dante’s jaw tightened. He thought of the vow he made to Maya in the Sweet Haven Bakery, a vow to never let the dark underworld touch their lives again.
"I am going to use my mind, sweetheart," Dante whispered, tapping his temple. "Not my hands. True power isn't about how much damage you can inflict; it's about how much control you can maintain when the world tries to drag you into the dark."

He kissed her forehead and stood up, watching her run safely back into the house. He turned to Matteo, his expression hardening into impenetrable granite.
"Matteo, initialize the Ghost Protocol," Dante ordered. "I want every server connected to Lorenzo Vieri tracked. If he wants to play a game of economic warfare, I am going to show him why I was the most feared man in New York."
