Chapter 6

The ballroom fell into a hushed, respectful silence as Ethan Caldwell tapped the edge of his champagne flute with a silver spoon. The gentle ringing sound carried perfectly across the marble floors, drawing the attention of the city’s most powerful figures. Ethan stood tall, his dark navy suit immaculate, a warm, genuine smile illuminating his handsome face.

"Ladies and gentlemen, friends and family," Ethan began, his deep, commanding voice echoing off the high ceilings and crystal chandeliers. "I want to thank you all for being here tonight. This past year has brought profound challenges to my family, but it has also brought profound light."

While the guests focused entirely on the billionaire, Grace Holloway was sprinting through the shadowed outer corridor, moving with the silent, explosive speed of a trained martial artist. Her black-and-white maid uniform blurred as she bypassed the service doors, angling for the grand staircase.

In the main room, Sabrina Vale was moving with terrifying purpose. She slipped behind the towering floral arrangements, using the crowd's focus on Ethan to cover her approach. Lily stood near the polished banister of the staircase, her small hands gripping the wood. The nine-year-old girl in the lavender dress looked around wildly, the fog of the daily sedatives finally lifting from her mind. She opened her mouth, her breathing hitched, preparing to speak.

Sabrina reached the child. With a vicious, lightning-fast motion, she grabbed Lily by the upper arm, yanking the girl behind the thick marble pillar of the staircase, completely out of Ethan’s line of sight.

Lily gasped in shock, but Sabrina’s hand clamped brutally over the child's mouth.

"Keep quiet, you little brat," Sabrina hissed, her elegant mask dissolving into pure, unadulterated malice.

Sabrina’s other hand pulled the object from her clutch. It was a medical syringe, fully prepped and loaded with a heavy dose of clear sedative. If the child wouldn't drink it, Sabrina was prepared to inject it directly into her leg to ensure she remained a silent ghost until the trusts were signed.

"Just a little pinch," Sabrina whispered, her eyes wide and manic, raising the needle toward Lily’s thigh.

Grace burst into the ballroom from the side entrance. Her eyes locked instantly onto the scene unfolding behind the marble pillar. She saw the flash of the needle. She saw the terror in Lily’s eyes.

There was no time to shout. There was no time to reason.

Grace didn't hesitate. She didn't think about her job, her uniform, or the billionaire speaking at the center of the room. She launched herself forward. She took three massive, sprinting strides across the polished marble floor, her athletic legs generating explosive power.

Sabrina lunged downward to conceal the syringe and strike the child.

Grace leaped into the air.

Time seemed to slow to a cinematic crawl. Grace Holloway twisted her body mid-air, executing a flawless, devastating taekwondo jump kick. The movement was sharp, decisive, and packed with incredible kinetic force. Her black shoe cut through the air, aimed directly at the beautiful, cruel face of Sabrina Vale.

Ethan, distracted by the sudden movement in his peripheral vision, turned his head. He stepped instinctively toward the pillar, completely shocked by the violent explosion of motion in his elegant ballroom.

As Grace flew through the air, her eyes locked with Sabrina’s terrified gaze.

"Get your hands off her!" Grace shouted, her voice an intense, sharp command that ripped through the polite silence of the gala.

The heel of Grace’s shoe connected squarely with Sabrina’s jaw.
