Chapter 13

Ethan Caldwell stared at the woman standing across his mahogany desk. Dressed in her simple black-and-white maid's uniform, Grace Holloway radiated a lethal, professional aura that his highly paid, heavily armed security detail entirely lacked.
"You realize that staying here paints a massive target on your back?" Ethan asked, pulling a sleek leather folio from his drawer.
"I have never feared being a target," Grace replied, her tone sharp and unyielding. "But I have conditions. I will have absolute, uncontested authority over Lily’s daily schedule. Every ounce of food, liquid, or medication given to that child passes through my hands first. I require unrestricted administrative access to the estate's entire surveillance grid, and I will personally vet and replace the inner-circle protection detail."
"Agreed," Ethan answered without a microsecond of hesitation. He unscrewed a heavy Montblanc fountain pen, rapidly signed a blank check, and slid it across the polished wood. "Fill in whatever number you deem appropriate. As of this exact second, Lily’s life is in your hands."
Grace picked up the check, but instead of pocketing it, she tore it precisely in half right before the billionaire's stunned eyes. "I work on a monthly retainer at standard senior security consulting rates. I do not accept hazard bonuses for doing what is morally right." She turned toward the heavy oak doors. "I am going to secure Lily’s bedroom. I highly suggest you begin auditing the Vale siblings' recent business associates, Mr. Caldwell. The man in the black suit tonight wasn't a cheap street thug."
The library doors clicked shut. Ethan stood alone, staring at the torn pieces of the blank check. For the first time in his life, the titan of industry felt he had finally encountered a human being whose loyalty could not be bought.
Meanwhile, Grace moved swiftly down the private corridors leading to the family’s residential wing. Unlike the chaotic ballroom below, this area was deathly quiet and heavily restricted. Entering Lily’s room, the soft amber glow of a nightstand lamp illuminated the small, pale face of the girl deep in an exhausted sleep.
Grace approached the bed, meticulously checking the reinforced window locks and the perimeter sensors. She gently pulled back the edge of Lily's heavy duvet, her sharp eyes scanning the child’s small, fragile arm. Under the dim light, she discovered a cluster of faint, minuscule bruises—the undeniable track marks of fine-gauge needles. A volcanic rage boiled in Grace’s chest. Sabrina had resorted to injecting the child whenever she refused the tainted milk.
Grace sat on the edge of the mattress, gently taking Lily’s cold hand. "No one will ever hurt you again, Lily. I swear it," she whispered into the quiet room.

Suddenly, from the internal intercom device resting on the vanity, a burst of static hissed, followed by a heavily distorted, electronic voice:
"You have disrupted our timeline, Holloway. Enjoy the victory tonight. The real game has only just begun."
