Chapter 42

The mahogany-paneled study smelled of aged leather and the faint, nostalgic trace of rich cigars, a stark contrast to the bright Tuscan afternoon outside. Dante poured a measure of amber whiskey into a crystal glass and pushed it across the desk toward Matteo. The enforcer downed it in a single swallow, exhaling a long, ragged breath.

"The shipping ports are secure, Dante, but the political shield protecting them is failing," Matteo began, placing a heavily encrypted tablet on the desk. "When we handed Volkov and the black ledger over to the federal authorities, we assumed it dismantled the European smuggling routes completely. We were wrong. The ledger was only a localized node. There is a higher coalition."

"The Golden Circle," Dante stated quietly, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. "I thought they were a myth. A boogeyman the old mafia commission used to keep the young blood in line."

"They are real," Matteo confirmed, his scarred face twisting with a mixture of anger and exhaustion. "They are an alliance of corrupt international bankers, rogue intelligence operatives, and old-money aristocrats. They don't deal in street violence or territory. They deal in absolute economic control. And they want your ports, Dante. They need our uninspected pipeline to move untraceable military assets into the Eastern Seaboard."

The heavy study doors opened softly. Maya walked in, carrying a tray of fresh espresso. She didn't retreat when the conversation stopped. She set the tray down and took a seat beside Dante, her posture projecting an unbreakable resolve.

"Don't stop speaking on my account, Matteo," Maya said evenly, her warm eyes locking onto the hardened enforcer. "If this threatens my family, I am part of this council. What is their leverage?"

Matteo looked at Dante, seeking permission. Dante nodded without hesitation. Their marriage was built on a foundation of absolute honesty.

"They have frozen three of our anonymous offshore hedge funds," Matteo explained, tapping the tablet to reveal a cascade of red financial alerts. "They are systematically bleeding our legitimate cash flow. Yesterday, a man named Lorenzo Vieri contacted me. He claims to speak for the Circle. He gave us forty-eight hours to sign over administrative control of the South Docks."

"And if we refuse?" Maya asked, her voice perfectly level, revealing none of the terror she felt inside.

"Then the financial attacks turn physical," Matteo replied grimly. "They know you are in Tuscany. They know about Sophia and Leo."

Dante stood up slowly, stepping toward the window to look out at the ancient olive tree where Elena had bled to protect them years ago. His pale gray eyes flashed with a cold, razor-sharp glint—the terrifying, lethal intent of a sleeping lion newly awakened.

"Lorenzo Vieri believes he can starve us into submission without firing a shot," Dante murmured, his voice a low, dangerous vibration. "He thinks my retirement has made me soft. He thinks because I dropped the gun, I forgot how to go to war. Maya, Matteo... we are not going to fight them with bullets. We are going to bury them in the very system they worship."
