Chapter 10

Ethan Caldwell looked up from his niece, his handsome face lined with an exhaustion that went bone-deep. His eyes, usually sharp and commanding, were soft, vulnerable, and shining with unshed tears. The bright lights of the crystal chandeliers caught the profound gratitude etched into his features.

He didn't stand up. Remaining on his knees beside the grand staircase, Ethan reached out his right hand.

Grace paused. The athletic maid looked at the billionaire, her breathing steady, her expression neutral but observant. Slowly, she reached out and placed her hand in his.

Ethan’s grip was firm, warm, and anchored in absolute sincerity. He held her hand tightly, his thumb resting gently against her knuckles. The close-up shot of their joined hands highlighted the stark contrast between his pristine dark navy suit and her simple black-and-white uniform cuff.

For a long, powerful moment, neither of them spoke. The subtle, cinematic pause allowed the emotional weight of the night to settle over the grand ballroom. The guests remained silent, watching the most powerful man in the room kneel before a servant.

Ethan looked directly into Grace’s eyes. His facial micro-expressions conveyed a thousand unspoken apologies and a depth of respect he had rarely shown anyone.

"Thank you," Ethan said. His voice was quiet, decisive, and stripped of all billionaire pretense. It was simply the voice of a desperate father figure. "Thank you for giving my child her voice back."

Grace offered a very small, restrained smile. It wasn't a smile of victory, but one of genuine, quiet comfort. "She always had her voice, Mr. Caldwell. She just needed someone to make it safe enough to use it."

Ethan nodded slowly, squeezing her hand one last time before letting go. He stood up, lifting Lily effortlessly into his arms. The little girl rested her head on his shoulder, her eyes drooping as the adrenaline finally began to fade.

"Thomas," Ethan commanded, his voice returning to its usual authoritative timber, though the warmth remained.

The head butler stepped forward instantly from the crowd. "Yes, sir."

"Clear the ballroom. The party is over," Ethan instructed, his gaze sweeping over the shocked guests. "And I want my legal team in the library in ten minutes. We have a considerable amount of garbage to take out."

As the guests began to murmur and filter toward the exits, Ethan turned and carried Lily up the grand staircase, his heavy footsteps echoing on the marble.

Grace stood alone at the base of the stairs, smoothing her apron. She watched them disappear into the safety of the upper floors. She let out a long, slow breath, the tension finally leaving her athletic frame.

But as she turned to head back to the catering kitchen, her eyes caught a subtle movement near the secondary bar. A man in a dark suit, someone who hadn't fled with the rest of the guests, was standing perfectly still. He locked eyes with Grace. His expression was completely blank, but he reached into his pocket, pulled out a sleek black phone, and lifted it to his ear, never breaking eye contact with the maid who had just ruined a multi-million dollar coup.

Grace’s jaw tightened. Sabrina and Vance were dealt with, but as the man turned and vanished into the shadows of the hallway, Grace knew with chilling certainty that the war for the Caldwell estate had only just begun.
