Chapter 1 - The wedding ended before it began

The ring disappeared into buttercream.
Nobody moved.
Three hundred guests had watched me drop it.
Veronica stood beside the ruined cake, one side of her white gown soaked in champagne.
My daughter Mina sat ten feet away in her wheelchair, crying against my sister’s shoulder.
That was the only person in the room I cared about.
I crossed back to her.
“Look at me.”
Mina lifted her face.
There was a small cut near her hairline where she struck the marble.
Blood looked dramatic on pale skin.
The doctor later told me the wound was superficial.
At that moment, I did not know that.
“Does your neck hurt?”
She shook her head.
“Your back?”
“No.”
“Your arms?”
“My head.”
“I know.”
She whispered:
“Is she still gonna be my new mommy?”
“No.”
The answer came before I had consciously made it.
“No, sweetheart.”
Across the ballroom, Veronica shouted:
“Adriano!”
I did not turn.
Then her mother, Greta Crane, said quietly:
“Don’t do this here.”
That got my attention.
Not because she sounded afraid.
Because she sounded irritated.

As though the problem was location.
Not what her daughter had done.
