Chapter 21 - Mina asks what empire means

She heard adults say it.
Of course.
“What’s empire?”
I answered:
“Usually a lot of things one person controls.”
“Do you have one?”
“People say I do.”
“Is house empire?”
“Part of what they mean.”
“My wheelchair?”
“No.”
“My trust?”
I stopped.
She had heard that word too.
“What do you know about trust?”
“Aunt Sofia says Mommy made it.”
“Yes.”
“Is it mine?”
“It exists for you.”
“Can Veronica take?”
“No.”
“Can you?”
“Not for anything I want. I have legal duties about how it is used.”
She nodded as though she understood fiduciary law.
Then:
“Good.”
“Why?”
“I want horse.”
Of course.
“What kind?”
May you like
“Real.”
Trust litigation suddenly seemed easier.
